[Felixstowe Holiday]

1933 , Felixstowe (Suffolk)

Amateur film showing a family enjoying a holiday in Felixstowe and the surrounding area.

The first shots show the family bidding goodbye to friends who leave in their cars. A sequence shows gentlemen and then ladies playing bowls. The two do not appear on the green together. The next sequence shows a shrimp boat out at sea. Shots from the boat show other boats. The shrimps are sorted and boiled on board before the shrimp boats docks. As the boat comes into the harbour, there are shots of people strolling on the jetty. There are exterior and interior scenes of St. Andrew’s Church, the latter showing the stained glass window. A horse and cart passes by on the road outside the Church. There are shots of the family again and then of horse riding in the country. These scenes may show race horses being exercised on the gallops by the Bury Road at Newmarket. The next scenes show members of the family looking around a country house. There are shots of the croquet lawn and of them looking in an orangery or plant shop. Shots of Norwich include The Guildhall and Guildhall Hill, Henry Ash, gentlemen’s outfitters and the Cathedral. Back at Felixstowe, a small seaplane lands on the water. There are further shots of the family and of boats entering and leaving the harbour. A larger seaplane starts its engines outside a hanger. There are shots from a steam train followed by shots of the Abbey Gate and Angel Hotel in Bury St. Edmunds. In Felixstowe there are further scenes of seaplanes and of paddle steamers. There are shots of the port area and of the seafront and beach. The family are filmed on the main beach and on a quieter, rural beach. The family board a small boat that capsizes. The film ends with shots of ferries and the dock area.
