Historical buildings in Essex.

Scouts build a bivouac in the woods out of materials around them. This illustrates how the development of housing in Essex has been determined by materials available. A model shows an early dwelling made of wood and bracken. Further developments in building are shown using models. Timber framed buildings in Essex are shown, including a barn. The construction of this is used as a working example of the theory shown in the models. Other building materials used in Essex are shown using a 3D map. these include chalk, sand and gravel and brick clay. The film explains that bricks were introduced by the Romans. A model of a Roman Villa shows how they were used. Thatched cottages are shown undergoing repair. A workman plasters over lathes. Models show how construction developed further, including the development of oriole windows. The film shows examples of pargetting and carved woodwork. Brick is illustrated using models and en example of a Tudor manor house. A church depicts the use of stone and of flint. Finally the film shows the extraction of clay, sand and gravel and the construction of contemporary houses.
