Sand And Gravel

1956 , Essex (County)

An Essex County Council Educational film showing the process of concrete making.

Machines are used for mixing concrete at a construction site. Sand and shingle are lifted from a gravel pit by drag line and loaded onto a barge and moved by tug to the works where the contents are emptied. A second site shows dry working with a drag line emptying ballast into hoppers and then into trucks on a narrow gauge railway which are then towed away. At the works the contents are emptied through the bottom into a channel of water. The cleaning and grading equipment for sand and gravel is seen at work and there are shots of the different grades of each. A lorry removes a load of sand having been first levelled by hand.
