A boy scout and a sea scout undertake a 24-hour journey by themselves to receive the First Class badge.

The film begins with David being given his task. He is to undertake a journey on which he is to look after himself and record things seen. The journey will take 24 hours and will cover 14 miles. David is accompanied by his friend John, a sea scout. They leave from Epping. The signpost reads Woodford and London in one direction and Ongar, Chelmsford and Colchester in the other. The two of them wander through country lanes and across fields. They ask directions from a man with two children and visit an Anglo-Saxon Church. After asking permission from the farmer's wife at the farmhouse, they pitch their tent and light a fire. They cook a meal and eat it before cleaning their teeth and going to sleep. In the morning they wake up and clear away, leaving no trace of their visit. The farmer's son signs their log book. On their journey the next day, David records wild flowers seen. They visit a village shop and buy soft drinks and toffees. David records seeing a woodpecker, he finds an arrowhead in a stream. They return to Epping along the A11 from Cambridge, Newmarket and Norwich. The final scenes show David at the table in his home, writing his report. He receives his First Class Badge. There is a close-up shot of this.
