Red Poll cattle.

Scenes from East Anglia: the harvest on the Suffolk, Essex border, the Broads and the River Waveney, Sandringham House. The film introduces the Royal Herd of Red Poll Cattle, created by HM King George V in 1914. The Red Poll is an East Anglian breed and the origins of the breed are described, although after the opening sequences, few of the scenes are shot in East Anglia. The film expounds the advantages of keeping Red Polls with regard to longevity, milk yield, beef production and the quality of their hides for leather production. Poll means hornless and this is an advantage in leather quality. Hides of different cattle are shown, showing horn damage and comparing horned varieties with Red Polls. A range of leather goods is displayed. Some Red Poll Cattle are seen that have on certificates for milk yield. This is followed by a milking sequence and by shots from a Milk Marketing Board building. Here milk is bottled and butter made. A milk lady delivers the milk. Red Poll beef cattle are shown. Show points for heffers and bulls are demonstrated by the farmer in the farmyard. Heffers and bulls are paraded before HRH The Princess Royal at the Royal Show. The breed is shown outside in the winter and in Africa to emphasise its utility in extremes of climate. The headquarters of the Red Poll society in Ipswich feature. There are exterior shots showing Princes Street and interior shots showing secretaries at work keeping the records of the society. The work of the Society is reviewed. The film ends with a montage of shots of the cattle whilst the commentary recapitulates on the main points.
