The East coast floods of 1953.
Newsreel film showing flood scenes along the coast of East Anglia. It begins with aerial views which include flooded towns, a ship laying on her side in a doc and on a ship aground on the beach. In Gorleston, tree trunks and other debris clutter the flooded streets. In Essex there are further aerial shots of the damage. In flooded fields livestock lie dead. Many houses are damaged. There are interior and exterior shots of the Beach Hotel (location unknown) showing the devastation caused. Outside, a bus lies stranded by the flood water and several cars have overturned. People try to leave with their children, their pets and other belongings. There are shots of farmers rescuing sheep. Aerial views of scattered caravans are followed by shots from Jaywick of people in a rowing boat and general scenes of the flooded area. A man is filmed going from house to house up to his waist in water. Large fishing boats are washed up on the beach at another part of the coast and there are sequences of sandbagging and of a herd of cattle being brought to safety. The film finishes with flooded street scene and of people being evacuated. These scenes are possibly from the Netherlands.
