The Annual Oyster Feast in Colchester

This film opens with shots of the Annual Oyster Feast inside the Town Hall, Colchester. There are shots of the feast and close up shots of diners. Over views of the Castle and Colchester High Street, the film explains the importance of the Oyster industry and its connection with Colchester. There is a shot of the exterior of the Town Hall. At Brightlingsea, the mayor, Mr. Roger Hilham, and the corporation, with other invited guests, set out aboard the cruiser Viking saga for the oyster beds. At the beds, a nineteenth century oyster dredger pulls alongside. The Mayor introduces the town clerk who then reads out the proclamation opening the fisheries for the season. Three cheers are offered to the Queen. The guests partake of the traditional feast of gin and gingerbread. The commentary admits that no-one knows the origins of this. The corporation transfer to the dredger. The Mayor throws the first dredge and eats the first oyster.
