Great Yarmouth And Gorleston-on-Sea: The Resorts That Have Everything
1956 , Great Yarmouth (Norfolk)
Cat no. 516
A publicity film for Great Yarmouth and Gorleston-on-Sea with a commentary by Franklin Engelmann.
There are shots of cars and coaches on the A47 Acle Straight and steam and diesel trains, all supposedly bringing holiday makers to Great Yarmouth. The coaches arrive and the passengers alight. St. Nicholas' Church is in the background. There is a shot of a vintage car passing through. There are scenes from the beach. The commentary plugs the weather in Great Yarmouth as the driest area in the country. However, this appears to be letting them down because people are sitting in deck chairs fully clothed. A map shows the location of Yarmouth and Gorleston. There are street scenes of Yarmouth, showing the traffic and people about their everyday business. There are also shots of some residential parts of Yarmouth. These are followed by aerial views of Yarmouth showing the beach and the sea front, as well as the three piers, Wellington, Britannia and Nelson. They show the waterways, tennis courts and bowls greens and a caravan site at North Denes. Back on the promenade, we see children playing on the dunes at North Denes. This is followed by a sequence showing the pleasure waterways of Yarmouth, including row boats and paddle boats as well as the waterways gardens. Children's amusements in 'Joyland' are shown, including crazy golf, roller skating and a track for miniature cars. Further along the front, there is a swimming and diving show and a beauty contest by the pool. Gladys Morgan presents a sash to Miss Great Yarmouth. There are also shots of trampolining and of a bowls match. The next sequence is at the Yarmouth races. A horse enters the paddock, the tick-tack men, bookies and a race. Back at the beach, children watch a Punch and Judy Show. A pleasure boat lands and passengers alight onto the beach. The film takes a ride in a light aircraft to Scroby Sands off the coast of Yarmouth to see the seals. The next sequence is shot from the South Quay, near Yarmouth Town Hall. A steam tug and barge passes and Haven Bridge opens to allow the pleasure cruiser resolute to pass through. Other pleasure boats shown include the Eastern Princess, Norwich Belle, The Golden Galleon and the Queen of the Broads that is filmed at Horning. The commentary emphasises the excursions available from Yarmouth by boat and coach. There are shots of sailing craft on the broads and of ships, barges, drifters and coasters at the Port of Yarmouth. The film takes the viewer to Gorleston-on-Sea by steam ferry. At Gorleston there are views of the sea front showing the swimming pool, the yachting lake and the gardens. There are some shots of a regatta off the coast. The bowls greens, putting lakes and gardens on the quieter side of the Yare also feature. A shot of the evening sky leads into a montage of shots showing neon signs and the illuminated nightlife of Yarmouth. These shots feature the Pleasure Beach. The next morning, back on the beach, things are much as before.
