Sunshine, Fun and Laughter
1933 , Great Yarmouth (Norfolk)
Cat no. 515
Early promotional film of Great Yarmouth, featuring the actress Kathleen Daw.
This film introduces Yarmouth with a brisk montage of shots offering a taste of what is to come. These include the fairground, the swimming pool, a Punch and Judy show and acts from the theatre and music hall. Some shots are superimposed over others. The actress Kathleen Daw approaches by boat waving to the crowd. At the top of the revolving tower, Kathleen pronounces Great Yarmouth as 'Marvellous'. Shots taken from the top of the tower include the beaches and promenade, tennis courts and other seaside scenes. The commentator leads Kathleen through a tour of the town. Many shots are filmed through an iris lens. They visit the Wellington Pier, where they listen to the band and visit the Winter Gardens. There are shots of the front and the beach. Kathleen poses in a bathing costume for a sequence shot at the open air swimming pool. Along the promenade there are cars and buses. The film shows scenes from the gardens, the bowls greens and the waterways and gardens. Over a shot of Kathleen sniffing a flower, the commentator states that Great Yarmouth is the driest area in the country. The film tour continues with shots of the fairground and the boating lake. They visit the races where there are shots of the crowds, of a race and of the winning jockey leading his horse into the enclosure at the end. Across the river in Gorleston, there are some shots of motor boats. The film stresses the quieter nature of Gorleston. There are shots of the beach and of Marine Parade; the yachting pond and the gardens. Back in Great Yarmouth, the film shows evening shots of the town illuminated. At the Wellington Pier there are exterior and interior shots of the Concert Hall before Kathleen goes dancing in the Winter Gardens. The film ends with the Waterways illuminated and with shots of a firework display.
