Coverage of a Steam Engine Rally held near Bungay

A Whit Monday Grand Steam Engine Rally organised by the Norfolk Steam Engine Club and held at Woodton old Hall, near Bungay. The film opens with general shots of the crowds arriving and of the steam engines, some of which are already working. The commentator is sceptical about the occasion and the engines describing them as massive, hissing, grunting giants of another age and on another occasion ugly things. As the event develops, he becomes drawn to them and can appreciate their appeal to the enthusiasts. The engines and the enthusiasts who run them are shown in close up, polishing their charges and talking about them. One of the engines belongs to Alan Bloom of Bressingham Old Hall. The crew of this engine are shown. A judge moves through the crowd. The mechanisms are shown in motion - pistons, cranks and flywheels. The engines are shown moving about the field. Also displayed are a steam car, made in 1902 in Marsham, Norfolk, a bike and a motor bike. The commentator, now appreciative of the engines quotes writer Paul Jennings: "No diesel has drama or fire in her belly; No diesel was ever christened 'Britannia' or 'Nellie'." The film ends with a shot of the engines moving around the field. The commentator expresses the sentiment that he is glad that they too, like him, have had the chance to be "Out For The Day".
