Southend-On-Sea Golden Jubilee Celebrations, featuring events such as fireworks, a cycling race and a barge race.

This film records the events with which Southend-On-Sea celebrated its Golden Jubilee as a County Borough in 1964.The first event recorded is a firework display on April 21st. This is followed by a poster listing a Festival of Music. The film shows part of a cycle race held on May 9th, around the streets of Southend. The race is begun by the Mayor of Southend, Alderman Tebbitt who is accompanied by the Mayoress, Miss Edith Pilgrim. The winner, Harry Willettson, and the runner-up, John Clary, are presented with their prizes by the Chairman of the Festival Committee, Alderman Murfitt. There is a sequence from an open air concert and dance on June 5th. This features the local rock group 'The Avengers.' This was organised by the Southend Youth Council.The main part of the film shows the sailing barge race that was held off Southend on June 20th. This race was being revived after a lapse of 60 years. It was organised jointly by the Southend Yachting Week Committee and The Southend Jubilee Committee. There are some shots aboard the committee boat but there are lengthy shots of the race which took 7 hours and 56 minutes. It was won by the barge 'Memory.' 'May'. the oldest barge was third, despite breaking her top mast. There are shots from the pier showing the spectators, including powerboat racer, Jimmy Mole. The final scenes show an outboard Motor race that the British and United Kingdom Outboard Boat Association attempted to hold on July 12th. It was attended by the Mayor and Mayoress, Alderman and Mrs. Murray. This had to be abandoned because of rough seas.

Background Information

The commentary offers a history of sailing barges and of this race. It was held between 1873 and 1904. In 1900 there were over 2,000 sailing barges at work. 10 took part in this race. They were mainly built in Essex, in Harwich, Brightlingsea and Maldon. Some were built in Ipswich and Rochester. The oldest barge taking part was 'May'. She was built in 1888
