At Salhouse bakery loave of bread are baked.

The film opens with a shot of the sign on the bakery-cum-grocery wall. Bakery, Grocery and General Stores. Stop Here. There is a shot of the flint wall of the bakery with roses growing outside the door.Inside the bakery the baker pours the flour into an automatic mixing bowl. There are shots of this mixing the bread. The baker adds the yeast mixture and tends to the ovens. The dough is removed from the machine and then two bakers knead the bread by hand. One of the bakers can knead two loaves at the same time, one with each hand. The other baker weighs the portions of dough to check that the loaves will be the right size. The tins containing the bread are put into the oven. There is a shot of the dough proving in the tins. The tins are removed from the oven. The loaves are turned out, checked for weight and then loaded into a van.The film ends with a shot of a travelling knife-grinder at work on his bicycle driven grinder.

Background Information

The bakery was on Lower Street, Salhouse. This film may show the last baking on the premises. After baking on the premises ceased, the bakery was used as a store room. It became a private home in the late 1970s. The new owners, Mr. and Mrs. Woods turned the bakery into a museum of Broadland Crafts.
