Cat no. 492
Harvesting wheat in East Anglia.
The older method of harvesting using a reaper binder. This is seen in action in a wheat field pulled by a Fordson Major tractor which ties the sheaves automatically. They are then thrown onto the field where they are collected and stacked into stooks of six by farm workers to allow them to dry. Many of the worker in this process will be women and children who volunteer to land a hand to gather in the harvest. The grain is examined by the farmer or his foremen. The sheaves are loaded onto a trailer by a man using a pitchfork. and then carted away by horse to the threshing machine. The grain is loaded into the machine and then is collected into sacks. The final sequence shows the straw rick being built and thatched.
