Just The Job

1962 , Peterborough (Cambridgeshire)

A recruitment film made by Baker Perkins urging school leavers to take a job in industry as machine tool operators.

The film begins with a schoolboy, identified as 'David,' cycling home. To the exasperation of his mother he rushes straight to the garden shed and starts up a small lathe. At the Baker Perkins factory a coach load of senior schoolboys arrives. All are in uniform. They are given coffee and biscuits and a talk on their arrival and then they are shown around the factory. Overhead shots of the lathes on the factory floor. In the machine shop the boys are shown the importance of accurately marking up an object prior to drilling. There is an animated sequence showing how milling machines work on the same principles as Roman Chariot wheels, only cutting through metal, rather than ancient Brits. We see modern milling machines and the ?30,000 control panel. There is a sequence showing a potter moulding clay to set the scenes for cutting metal by machine. The machine has to be accurate to 1/1,000th of one inch. Digestive biscuit dyes are cut from a pattern. The boys are shown a recently installed lathe in the machine shop. In the fitting shop the boys are shown the assembly and testing of a machine for a chocolate factory. This is shown in use in the chocolate factory. The final scene shows 'David' and other apprentices at work on the factory floor, having taken up the offer of a career as a machine tool operator.
