Fire training in Norwich, 1939

This film was made late in 1939 and shows firemen practising with a turntable ladder. They receive instruction concerning a trailer pump. Using this they extract water from the river. (Reads Mill is in the background.) They also practise handling hoses. This part of the exercise may have taken place by the river at the back of King Street. An old building is seen ablaze. The firemen locate mains water and start to put out a fire. An air raid shelter is seen close by. After their work is done the firemen start to clear up.The final sequence shows a thatched house ablaze. The house was called The Thatch and was in Thorpe-next-Norwich. The firemen tackle the blazing roof whilst the people hurriedly bring out their belongings. This is a genuine fire, not a staged training exercise.
