The cultivation of vegetables from seed to greengrocer's shelves.

The film begins by showing a greengrocer opening his shop. The vegetables are delivered by E Green, Market Gardener. The greengrocer serves his customers. The main sequence of the film shows the work of the market gardener. This was filmed at the farm of Partridge and Cundy of Layham, near Hadleigh, Suffolk. The lorry backs into its shed. A rotivator is used to plough the land before it is rolled and harrowed. A seed drill plants some of the crops, although other are planted by hand. The crops are filmed at various stages of growth. Hoeing is done by machine and by hand. A sprinkler system waters the plants and they are treated with a powdered form of insecticide via a hand held machine. Gathering the crops includes pulling cabbages and spring onions and picking peas by hand. A machine turns up the potatoes which are then gathered by hand. The crops are packed carefully and loaded onto the lorry.
