A day in the life of retired farm worker, Tully George.
A day in the life of Tully George, a retired farm worker from Great Massingham, Norfolk. Throughout the film there are shots of the village, including St. Mary's Church, as well as of the mud flats at Brancaster, where Tully George digs for lugworms and goes sea angling. Tully George makes tea and cooks a full English fried breakfast for his wife. The two eat breakfast together in the kitchen of their bungalow. Mrs. George reads the Eastern Daily Press. There are interior and exterior shots of the bungalow, showing the roses at the front and the vegetable garden at the back. This is worked carefully by Tully George. He is seen sawing wood and then drinking, talking and playing cribbage in the Fox and Pheasant public house in Great Massingham. There are interior and exterior shots of the public house. Back at home in his shed, he chops wood for kindling whilst talking about the past and about how he feels he has to keep working. He drives to Brancaster to dig for lugworms. He tends to the churchyard and talks about some of the occupants. In particular he remembers a retired vicar who at the age of 82 married a 22 year old choir girl. They had two children and retired to Bexhill-on-Sea. He also remembers the lady's mother and how she would give a penny to any young man who greeted her in the old fashioned gentlemanly manner. The film ends with Tully George sea angling at night.
