Birds of the Fenlands

1963 , Fens (Fens)

Two children accompany a wildlife keeper and discover a number of nesting wild birds and other Fenland wildlife.

This film follows two children, Nigel and Rachael, who accompany keeper Harry Barnes through an unnamed Fenland mere and discover the birdlife and other wildlife that live there. The film contains many fenland scenes as well as shots of the birds and of a swallow-tailed butterfly. The children see coots, a swan with cygnets and a Great Crested Grebe, which is nesting. The keeper shows them bistort, an amphibious plant, and then the children watch a reed warbler making its nest. The children see moorhen and a white throat. Travelling in a punt though the water lilies they see a coot's nest. A swallow-tailed butterfly is featured. Moorhens walk over lily pads in search of food and a reed warbler feeds its young in the nest. Other creatures seen at the end of the film include a toad, ducklings and cygnets.
