1965 , Newmarket (Suffolk)

Pony riding for disabled children to build strength and confidence

The film shows riding as a sport at the very top level and compares this with the beneficial effects for the disabled. Opens with shots of disabled children riding at the Nightingale Riding School at Buckhurst Hill. There follows a sequence showing race horses at the stables of Sam Armstrong at Newmarket. They cross the Severalls and exercise on the gallops. Lester Piggott mows the lawn in his garden and plays with his daughter, Tracy. Later, he relaxes in an armchair in his home. There are further scenes from the gallops and then a brief scene of a horse racing meeting in Florida. At the Forest Lodge Riding School, Epping, Gerry Van Der Gucht presides over a riding class for disabled children. They exercise the horses and jump low fences. The children do physical exercises whilst mounted on the horses. The next sequence shows the building and opening of the Trust's new premises at Grange Farm, Chigwell. Mr. Van Der Gucht lays the foundation stone. The completed building is opened by the Duchess of Norfolk. She is presented with flowers and talks to disabled youngsters who are on horseback. Mr. Van Der Gucht is presented with a table lamp in appreciation of his services.
