Events at Dovercourt annual carnival

From the balcony of Carnival headquarters the Carnival Queen and others are viewed in fancy dress. The Carnival Queen is crowned and salutes the crowd. The procession moves off and proceeds through the assembled crowds on foot. Across the river mouth to Felixstowe a RAF Flying Boat flies low over the water. The Flying Boat lands on the water in the distance and then taxis across the sea. There are extracts of a cricket match, one of which shows a woman playing. Rowing dinghies are seen off Dovercourt Beach, followed by a swimming race and a life saving display. There is a 'fight' on a greasy pole, a soot and flour battle in boats. Back on land there are various feature races including a sack race, a wheelbarrow race and a three-legged race. The ferry boat 'Vienna' leaves the quay with the crowd at the rails waving. This is followed by a distant shot of he ferry on the river. Ladies' egg and spoon race and a three-legged race follow. The film concludes with shots of a firework display on a barge moored on the water.

Background Information

Captured by Thomas Bernard of Harwich. Thomas' father Charles Bernard established a Naval Uniform Outfitters at 63 Church Street in Harwich. When Charles passed on, Thomas continued the family business. Thomas had a 16mm camera and recorded not only his holidays, but events and happenings in Harwich and Dovercourt which the filmmaker dubbed the 'Bernard Bulletin'. It is likely that the filmmaker's son, also named Thomas, features somewhere within the footage. The filmmaker regularly showed his captured footage to film clubs and other local organisations. See D. Cleveland 'Films were Made'.
