Cromer
1951 , Cromer (Norfolk)
Cat no. 373
Holiday scenes in Cromer and the surrounding countryside.
On the beach at Cromer, a woman walks along the shoreline. Shots from lighthouse Hill show general views of the town, including the Pier and the Church. There are shots of the Lighthouse itself and looking in the other direction along the cliffs towards Overstrand. A crowd on the beach watches the launch of the lifeboat `Harriet Dixon', which was stationed on Cromer beach between 1934 - 1964. Then a distant shot shows the launch of the lifeboat H.F. Bailey from Cromer Pier. Both lifeboats are seen at sea, just off the beach. Beach scenes follow showing children in the sea, women on the beach and shots of the family. There are shots from the town centre near the Church. These include shots of the Church Tower and of the streets and shops. There follow further shots of the family around the town, on the sea front and on the pier. Older members of the family take tea in a beach hut. The next sequence shows exterior views of Sandringham house and Sandringham Church. There are further beach scenes showing the family laying card and sketching. The town crier is seen in full regalia and then two large cars approach Rust's shop. The family visit the Roman Camp tea gardens and there are shots of the family on Runton Heath. Back in Cromer we see a Concert Party, Out of the Blue performing in the Pier Theatre. Shots show singing, dancing and comedy turns. At the end of the performance the cast take a bow. There are scenes of Walsingham Abbey. These were taken c.1946 and include shots of a man drinking from a spring. There are brief shots of Binham Priory, before the family set off in an open passenger boat from Morston Quay. They land on Blakeney Point and the camera films birds, nests and eggs. A visit to a bungalow includes tea on the lawn. Shots of the sea at Cromer reveal the temporary bridge erected over the wartime breech in Cromer Pier. The final sequences dates from 1951 and show Norwich Cathedral and cloisters. In further scenes from Blakeney, there are shots of National 12's, Fireflies and other dinghies racing.
