Events and activities at St Andrews's Church, Chelmsford, 1962-1967.
A series of three films which have been joined. The cartoon titles are noteworthy. "Our Family" shows a family cine show. "Holiday Fun" shows a boy devouring candy floss. "At the Seaside" shows a man with his trousers up, dipping his toe into the water and then propelling it out with a crab attached. The end credits show two cavaliers fighting a duel. "The End" then appears as a tombstone. "Our Family". is a children's outing to Walton-on-the-Naze. The children arrive by bus at Colchester and then visit the castle before leaving for the seaside. Shots of them looking around the castle. At Walton they play rounders on the beach. Many shots of the children playing on the sands and in the sea. They visit the pier and go on the big wheel and other amusements. Back in Chelmsford there is a shot of the vicarage on Chigwell Road followed by a sequence showing a church fetes at Melbourne Park Gardens. Shots of the stalls and games, scouts cooking a barbecue, children dancing, rides on a breeches buoy apparatus and a sequence showing the Rev. Smith speaking at the microphone. Thers is one black man in the crowd. The sequence ends with a netball match (8:26). "Holiday Fun" was filmed in 1964 and shows a carnival procession. The carnival queen is crowned by Rev. Smith. Children and adults parade in fancy dress trhough the streets. There are floats and a band. The fete is opened by Bob Anrold, an actor. Many side stalls are shown and there is a Beatles-style band playing. Demonstrations from the St John's Ambulance Brigade and a dog handling team (6:20). "At the Seaside" was shot in 1964. Shows another children's outing to Walton-on-the-Naze. A brief shot of the Colchester Zoo wher children stroke a kangaroo. At Walton the children play on the beach, and a sequence shows rowing boats and canoes on the boating lake. The carnival procession through Chelmsford was shot in 1965. Various floats are seen including one of the Loch Ness monster and the Essex Institute of Agriculture. The final item shows a cub and scout camp at Chignall Smealey. Boys play cricket, prepare food and do their washing (10:00).

Background Information
Melbourne Park Gardens was destroyed to make way for a housing estate. Bob Arnold is famous for playing Tom Forrest in the radio serial `The Archers'. This is one of the films made and donated to the Archive by Rev. A.G. Smith also credited as Anthony Smith and as Tony Smith. Between 1956 and 1958 he was curate of All Saints Woodford Wells, Essex. Between 1962 and 1969 he was vicar of St Andrews, Chelmsford. From 1969 he was Rector of Mistley with Manningtree. Some of the films are under Mr Smith's name, others are made under the name `Apostle Fellowship'.
