Farming in winter and spring.

The film begins with views of the fen landscape and the animals on a farm near Fen Ditton. Sheep and show cows are fed with mangolds and pigs with potatoes. A pigman clears the manure from the pig shed and then stacks this on the field. When it reaches the right strength it will be spread on the field as a fertiliser. A nuffield tractor is seen ploughing and a springtime harrow is seen working. A wintry sequence shows pigs happy to root about in the snow whilst horse and cattle are taken into sheds and require feeding. Sugar beet is taken from the clamp and loaded onto a lorry via a machine that separates the soil and straw. It is taken by lorry to the sugar beet factory. Kale, a winter cattle feed is seen growing. Mangolds are loaded onto a pony and cart by the farmers' daughters and distributed to the cattle. They are chopped by machine, mixed with chaff and warm treacle for feeding to the calves. Winter bedding is prepared and straw is taken to the fields where it will be used as a form of fertiliser. The cows enter the milking parlour. They are prepared for milking by electric machine. The milking process is shown, including the milk passing over the cooler. A farm worker cuts hedges by hand. The waste of the hedges is burned. The ash will be used on the soil to counteract acidity. The winter wheat is beginning to shoot. Fertiliser is loaded into a machine and spread on the field. Calves and lambs are shown. The farmer records the details of the lambs and an identifying number stamped on their backs. To move the ewe and her lamb into a special pen, the farmer carries the lamb and the ewe automatically follows. Another fertiliser sequence follows, this time showing how machinery in farming can sow grain and spread fertiliser at the same time. Another sequence combines sowing sugar beet with spraying weed killer. Women ride on the back of the potato planter to fill it as it progresses.
