The Centenary of the opening of the Southwold Railway.

This is an amateur film showing the official recognition of the centenary of the defunct Southwold Railway. There are shots of the crowd milling around before the opening of official proceedings, timed to begin at 5.20 pm, when the last train left Southwold. The original station bell is rung by a the former station master, Bert Girling. This is followed by speeches. The crowd are addressed by Mr. Barrett Jenkins, an unidentified speaker and then by the Mayor of Southwold, Mr. J. Hurrant. A plaque is unveiled on the site of the original railway station, now the Police Station. There are further crowd shots and then a close up static shot of the plaque. Site of Southwold Railway Station, the only 3 foot gauge passenger Railway in England. Opened 24th September, 1879, closed 11th April, 1929. Erected on 11th April, 1979 in commemoration.The film finishes with shots of what appears to be someone's back garden and greenhouse.
