The R33 airship at Pulham air base and in flight.

The film is a mixture of close-up shots and long shots, including some aerial shots, of the airship R33 at the Pulham Air Base and in flight. The airship is seen emerging from the hanger. This is followed by a shot of it flying over the camera. There are other shots of the airship in flight before its return to Pulham is recorded. The airship discharges water ballast. Men hold the cabin and guide the airship into the hanger alongside the R36. The film finishes with a close-up shot of the Commander, Major G.H. Scott.

Background Information

In 1912 the Admiralty gave orders for suitable land to be found for the establishment of an Air Station for the Admiralty. 500 acres were bought at Pulham St. Mary and Rushall. The RN had moved 100 personnel into the area by 1915. By the end of World War I, they numbered over 3000. The first Pulham Pigs were built to keep look out for mines or submarines whilst engines were repaired. The R33's Great Flight.Experimental work on mooring masts was undertaken by Major G. Herbert Scott, a regular RN engineer. He commanded the R34 on its double Atlantic crossing in 1919 before becoming Captain of the R33. He was killed aboard the R101 in 1930.The R33 arrived at Pulham in March, 1919 and was the first airship to use this mooring mast. She was deployed to investigate the commercial use of airships. Having been stored at Cardington since 1921 she returned to Pulham for trials in 1925. It was during this period that she broke from the mooring mast during a gale for an unscheduled flight. This film records her return. After being used in design studies for the R100 and the R101, the R33 was placed in long term storage in November, 1926 and was scrapped in 1928.
