The restoration of Pakenham Mill.

This film begins with a pleasure boat approaching on the river and passing the restored Pakenham Mill. There are scenes of the unrestored Mill with broken sails and then a long shot of the restored Mill. This is followed by a shot of the miller, Michael Bryant. Michael Bryant discusses whether the wind is sufficient to set the Mill working. Having decided that it is, he demonstrates trimming the blades of the sails and starting the Mill up. He highlights the dolly, mainly decorative, and the fantail, for turning the sails into the wind. From inside the Mill, there are shots over the fields taken between he moving sails. The film shows the main drive shaft and the gear wheels, along with winding gear, haling up a sack of grain and the drive train leading to the stones. A sack is emptied for grinding and fed down between the stones. The finished product is stacked and loaded onto a lorry. The film finishes with shots of the Mill and the sails with Michael Bryant speaking to the camera.

Background Information

Pakenham Mill is a large five storey tower Mill, built about 1830. It is kept in good working order. It no longer works commercially but the stones are used occasionally. there are two pairs of stones (a third has been removed), a domed cap with gallery and a fantail. There are four patent sails.
