Home typists employed by the Norwich Union.

The film begins with a view of St. Leonard's Road and of Number 61. The film introduces Mrs. Cynthia Bird, a 31 year-old housewife and mother of three children. The first half of the film is an interview with Mrs. Bird, sitting in her home she explains the benefits of working from home. She describes her day and estimates her weekly wage to be between £7 and £10. The film explains the technical side of the arrangement, the outworking typists are audio typists. The letters are dictated onto a tape recorder. The home typist telephones the tape recorder and types at home. The tape recorder is controlled by foot pedals. At the end the letters are faxed to the office. A spokesperson for Norwich Union explains the advantages to the company of using outreach typists. He estimates that the home typists save the company approximately 20% on overheads. In response to questioning he stresses that there will be no redundancies as workers in the office can be used to perform more skilled and more technical work. There are views of the office and of the home typist system whilst he speaks.
