Hands or Feet

1961 , Norwich (Norfolk)

An item from the BBC East series, Outlook. A series of interviews recorded at the Lakenham Boys School regarding the policy of playing both rugby and soccer.

The Headmaster, Mr. Allen, is interviewed on the games field. The Lakenham Boys and Girls schools are in the background. Mr. Allen explains that there is no social motive in playing rugger compared to twenty years ago. However, he contradicts himself by adding that one can promote a greater classlessness through games. He is asked whether it is better to excel at one game than play three adequately. Mr. Allen approaches this issue from a child centred point of view, explaining that the boys will be able to choose the game in which they excel as individuals. The games master, Mr. Lane explains that the boys play all three winter sports for two years and then choose the game they prefer. However, all the interviews centre on soccer and rugby - the third winter sport is not mentioned. Some younger pupils are asked which game they prefer and they offer a mix of answers. Please note that this film ends abruptly.

Background Information

Lakenham Boys' and Girls' Schools, both secondary modern schools, merged with the Hewitt Technical Grammar School to form the modern Hewitt School when the City of Norwich opted for a comprehensive system. At the time it would have been unusual for a Secondary Modern School to have taught rugby.
