The production process of malt at The New Maltings.

The construction of the new maltings and storage silos is shown. There follow shots of the completed silos. Inside the maltings we see the huge seeping tank with a succession of automatic processes taking place. There are shots of the control panels, more automatic processes, and then barley is shown sprouting in the germination box. There are further views of the control panels and of the gas burning heaters.The next sequence shows the interior of the works laboratory with chemists at work. There are general exterior views of the maltings including some aerial shots. Malt is loaded into bulk carrying lorries advertising 'Double Diamond.' These are seen driving away.

Background Information

The new malting is concerned ... was opened in March, 1976 and replaced five of the old floor maltings. The manpower was reduced by about fifty overall, and when we get the new barley drying and handling plant we shall lose a few more. Fortunately all the men were found new jobs before they left, and if they were sixty, had immediate pensions. The output of the new plant all the seven floor at Mistley. This includes the floor Maltings which are still open in School Lane. (I. Garwood, 1980.)
