Career opportunities with Fisons.

A promotional film advertising career and training opportunities with Fisons. It shows a number of apprentices and trainees at work and explains the qualifications they have and that they hope to gain. Trainee Chemist. A male of about eighteen years old is at work testing the nitrogen content of a sample. He joined Fisons after GCEs and is studying one day a week at technical college for advanced level. He could go on to study for an HND and membership of the Royal Society of Chemists. Calculating Machine Operator. A female, who is carrying out statistical analysis at the electromechanical calculating machine. She also joined Fisons after GCEs. There is no mention of further training, despite having joined the company at the same time and with the same qualifications as the Chemist. Trainee Analyst. This shows a girl working an infra red spectrometer. She is studying for an HNC. Crop Recorder. The crop recorder is seen in the field and in the glasshouse. He works on crop layout and fertiliser application. The crop recorder studied general agriculture for two years at the Norfolk Farm Institute. Secretary. The secretary is, of course, female. She is taking shorthand dictation and then typing. Through continuation course at the technical college, she will gain greater efficiency and may be allowed to handle more sensitive work. Opportunities With Fisons. Trainee Soil Chemist. The (male) trainee soil chemist is setting up a radioactive tracer experiment on phosphate take up. He is studying at technical college and plans to study for a degree. Graduate Chemist. The one shown is unusual because he has gone on to work as a technical officer. There is scope for specialised research. The language of the commentary betrays that graduate chemists and technical officers are thought of as male. Draughtsman. The draughtsman is seen with the works engineer and in the drawing office. He is studying for an HNC at technical college. Apprentice Electrician. He is working on the construction of an electric motor. He is studying at technical college for intermediate City and Guilds in electrical installation. Fisons emphasise that this is a qualification recognised throughout industry. Apprentice Chemical Plant Operator. He is testing for gases and is filmed in the laboratory also. He is studying for City and Guilds examinations and could become a supervisor. Commercial Trainee. Working in the purchasing department he has GCE passes in French and German. He is working for the Institute of Purchasing Officers' examinations.
