Henry Cotton opens the new golf club house in Ipswich.

The film shows Henry Cotton in plus-fours and golf shoes, and club officials golfing on the new course. They are watched by a large crowd and are shown teeing off and putting. The crowds follow the golfers around the course. At the end of the film, Henry Cotton and Golf Club members are seen outside the timbered clubhouse. There are shots of the crowds waiting outside. Most of these appear to be well-dressed women.

Background Information

This film is a local newsreel produced by Bostock cinemas. The original golf club was on public land on Rushmere Heath. The new club was formed by a breakaway group on adjacent, private, land. Henry Cotton. In 1928, Henry Cotton was not the star player he was to become. As yet, he had only won the Kent Professional Championship, albeit three years in a row. He won his first 'major,' the Open Championship, in 1934. His second Open success came in 1937 and the third in 1948. He won the US Open in 1956. He also won three PGA titles in 1932, 1940 and 1946. He wrote several books about golf, mainly coaching manuals, and also designed golf courses. He died in South Africa in 1987, aged eighty. Harry West. Harry West was born on 3rd October 1898 and died in 1963. He was attached to the entertainment business all of his working life. He had toured with Bostock's circus and managed several of the Bostock's cinemas. He also managed the Hippodrome at Ipswich.
