The work of the Flatford Mill Field Centre.

The film begins with a map, highlighting the position of Flatford Mill. During the Spring Biology Week with Dr. Ennion, the warden, directs a group of students. The students make a line transect and then a study of the hedges, ditches and streams of the valley. The salinity changes are noted as they go up the valley as are the flora and fauna. At one stage, Willie Lott's cottage is visible in the background. There are shots of students examining mosquito larvae and wading into the Mill Pond. Back in the laboratory we see a close up shot of mosquito larvae and a harvest mouse in its cage. On the entomology course a group of younger students with various pieces of apparatus search for insects. Among the catches a harvest spider and a birch sawfly caterpillar.

Dr Ennion - the Warden directing the making of a line transect - a count of the plants over which the line goes. Survey of hedges on the floor of the valley. The party was led by D. Ennion - the Warden. Dr. Ennion's group also survey the ditches and streams in the same area. These connect with the river below the Mill Lock and are brackish. The salinity gradually disappears as we go up the valley. As the salinity goes there is a gradual change in plant, animal and insect life in the dykes. The kind of mosquito larvae, for example, will tell us whether the water is salt or fresh. Waders off. Survey of the Mill Pool. Harvest mouse.Insect collecting. Harvest spiders:- Megalunus diadema trogulus tricarimatus. Birch sawfly larva. The end.
