A guided tour to summer time at Clacton-On-Sea, 1962.
The opening shots of this film show the beach and promenade in close season. The audience is introduced to its guide and commentator, a local boatman. The scene moves to Clacton Airstrip, where pleasure flights are offered to tourists. A group enters a plane and there are aerial shots back along the four miles of sea front at Clacton. The public gardens feature with their displays of tulips. There are shots of the town centre and the local fish is highly recommended. This leads into a sequence advertising local amenities. Clacton Angling Club offer a day's fishing off the pier. A man is shown landing a skate. Essex County Cricket Club play county Championship matches at Clacton during the Cricket Festival. Two bowls matches are shown, one in formal whites and one in less formal everyday clothes. Clacton golf course follows. A man landing in the bunker offers a link with beach scenes. On the beach there are children playing in the sand and some people are eating ice cream. There is a long shot of the beach and the pier. Pleasure boats are on the sea along with small boats and lilos. A group is diving off a breakwater. There is also a Punch and Judy Show on the beach. People boarding the NEMO II for a boating trip leads into the next sequence advertising the attractions of Clacton Sailing races feature and there are the National Finals of 'Ideal Holiday Girl of Great Britain', 1961. Coverage of this offers a chance to see interior shots of the Pavilion. The model boating lake is shown and then the pier and its attractions. These include trains, The Ghost Train, 'Steel Stella', the helter skelter, dodgems and the swimming pool. Here children are offered swimming lessons. The Ramblas Concert Party perform on the pier. There are speedboat trips and the chance for a cruise up the Blackwater River aboard the paddle steamer, 'Medway' as well as a day trip to France aboard the 'Queen of the Channel. There is a shot of the paddle steamer at sea. The scene moves into the town for the Carnival. There is a band, floats and people in fancy dress. The night life of Clacton is highlighted, showing the exteriors of Theatres, Cinemas and dance halls. The Carnival is completed with a firework display. One of the displays features an outline of the Queen. The film closes as it began; with the guide on the beach during the close season.
