A Day Of One's Own
1955 , British Isles generally (Other)
Cat no. 200
Women from all over Britain take a day off from being housewives.
The opening titles are a cartoon of a woman putting out the washing. The credits appear on the various items of laundry. The film opens with suburban streets and shows a variety of women all doing the washing, by hand in the sink or in a twin tub, and all looking harassed. The commentator is reciting the popular song 'Twas on a Monday Morning... On Wednesday morning one of the housewives announces I'm taking a day off! Describing herself and all housewives as pieces of cloth that have been dipped in housework and never properly wrung out, she takes her children to a friend, catches a bus to Waterloo Station and takes a train to the country. The next group of women are a W.I. group which has gone to Durham for the day. The next is a single lady who has visited Norwich. There are shots of her in the streets of Norwich and then she visits the Art Gallery in the Castle. There are exterior and interior shots of the Castle. The next scene shows a group of women catching the boat from the Western Isles to the mainland of Scotland. Another group enjoys a day on the river. A mother and daughter go to the market at Pontypridd and two friends go for a day in Manchester. The film finishes catching up with what the first woman has done with her day before arriving back in London.
