Railway repair works commence following a serious train collision in Bentley, 1971.

The film was taken some hours after one goods train had run into the back of another near Bentley level crossing. There are shots of a gang at work relaying the buckled 'down' line. A travelling crane passes on the track. A locomotive, number 6812, tries to pass. There are shots of the damaged wagons heaped in a filed together with a wheelless brake van. The final shot is a distant view of the wreckage through trees

Background Information

A week of 12 hour shift working by a 19 year old signalman formed the background to a serious collision between two goods trains between Manningtree and Bentley (E. Region). The signalman, in Bentley signalbox, accepted a goods train and then, on his own admission, fell asleep and on waking assumed that the train must have passes and gave 'Train Out of Section' to Manningtree. Soon afterwards he accepted a following goods train which entered the section and collided violently with the train in front, which had stopped in section with a brake fault. The guard of this train was also at fault in that he had not protected his train in rear during the 19 minutes that it was at a stand. The accident would almost certainly have been prevented if the signalling had been equipped with 'Welwyn' controls but it was not. (Railway Accidents, HMSO, 1971.)
