[Fish Quay Scenes]
1950 , Great Yarmouth (Norfolk)
Cat no. 182
The herring industry at Great Yarmouth.
The opening shot shows a motor drifter entering the harbour. The next shot is filmed from the quay and shows a mixture of steam and motor drifters. Fish are unloaded and boxed. The next sequence shows the fisher girls, quite elderly women at this date, gutting herring. Swills (baskets of fish) are moved by horse and cart. A distant shot shows barrels on the South Denes. Three girls are shown moving fish and barrelling.

Background Information
When this film was taken, the herring industry was in decline. It is apparent from the age of most of the workers, particularly the girls, that younger men and women were no longer seeking jobs in the industry.
