Electrics: Local Pictures including The Mart (version 1)
1926 , Wisbech (Cambridgeshire)
Cat no. 173
Wisbech street scenes filmed to be shown at the local Electric cinema.
The film shows various street scenes in Wisbech, some taken looking back from a moving vehicle. In the first shot the camera moves slowly along a wide street. We see buses, handcarts and horses and carts as well as motor cars and bicycles galore. There is a group of men gathered round a sale ring. From a stationary camera point the sale is shown again, with handcarts parked nearby. The camera moves past another sale point, where goods include bundles of brushwood. Cyclists and pedestrians are seen and for a time a bus follows the camera past various shops. The bicycles all seem to get out of the way of the bus. Parked by the kerb is a trades bike with a carrier almost as big as the bike itself. The camera continues to move through the crowded streets and by the side of the road we see a legless organ grinder. There are shots of the stalls on the market. A policeman pounds his beat. There are very few cars on the road. Various perambulators are in evidence. In general the women wear long coats and cloche hats; the men are wearing overcoats or mackintoshes with a variety of headgear. Some groups of people are shown in close-up. These include a group of (predominantly) young children arranged outside the Electric Theatre, Norfolk Street. The scenes shifts to a bicycle shed and men, women and boys are seen collecting their bicycles and cycling away. Boys are handing out leaflets. The camera switches to a shot outside the factory revealing the name 'Burall Bros. Patent Label Makers'. A group poses for the camera outside the factory on South Brink. The next scene is another, although shorter, street scene. There is a general view of the Clarkson Memorial before the camera moves away over the Bridge nearby to show some shops. There is a short film of a football match, presumably Wisbech Town, apparently shot in fog. Men and women are seen leaving the gate of Balding and Mansell, Fine Arts Printers. Many light cigarettes as they go. A man shows a poster to the camera, advertising a football match between Park Works and Watton United. The final sequence is of the fairground, known as the Mart, and includes roundabouts and other amusements. There is a large crowd gathered at the fair.
