A cinema advertisement for Pom, an early variety of instant mashed potato.

The film is based on the Cinderella story, except that Cinderella has become a middle class suburban housewife, living at No. 12, Pumpkin Lane. Cinderella is crying in the kitchen because she wanted to go out for the afternoon but has too many potatoes to peel. Enter the Fairy Godmother with Pom. The Fairy Godmother demonstrates making Pom. Cinderella tastes it and approves. The Fairy Godmother then shows Cinderella how to make a Shepherd's Pie, drop scones and chips, all with Pom.

Background Information

Pom. In 1946, in conjunction with Chivers and Sons Ltd, Colmans formed MPP (Products) Ltd to manufacture mashed potato powder. This had its origin in the government's urgent demand for potato to be converted into a concentrated form to save on shipping space. The product, when launched on the domestic market, was christened Pom. Mona Washbourne (1903-1988). Known for her work as a supporting actress, sympathetic mothers, aunts, matrons or grannies, her most famous roles included her work with Glenda Jackson in `Stevie', in which she p'layed the poets ever loving but puzzled aunt, and with Tom Courtney in `Billy Liar', as the mother who is concerned at her husband's violence because it might spoil her son's newly laundered shirt.
