Background Information

Harwich and Manningtree Standard, Thurs. April 12th, 1973 wrote: On Sunday afternoon, 8th April, 1973, fire broke out in the disused buildings on Mistley Quay, on the River Stour, near Manningtree, Essex. Eight fire engines attended, drawn from Manningtree, Colchester, Weeley, Dovercourt and Holbrook (Suffolk.) The fire started in some corrugated iron buildings built mainly of timber, and spread rapidly into the disused Maltings. It took about an hour to get the fire under control. The buildings were badly damaged. The day of the fire was cold and snow had fallen for some hours previously. The old Maltings belonged to Brooks of Mistley until a few years ago but were sold to a firm of developers who submitted an elaborate plan for luxury flats utilising, where possible, the existing old buildings of character on the three acre site on this part of Mistley Quay, known as Rigby Quay. The application for constructing these 71 flats and converting the existing building was turned down, and eventually the buildings were demolished. There was a lot of local opposition to the residential development of the site. Local people wanted it to go for industrial use to provide employment.
