Background Information
Fred Pickering was born in Ipswich in 1886 and died in 1967. A moulder at Ransomes, Sims and Jefferies, he learned to swim in the Gipping and joined the Ipswich swimming club at a young age. During the early years of the century, many swimming competitions were held in the sea, swimming along the shoreline. He was Suffolk Champion for three years in succession, which enabled him to keep the cups. He won about 30 medals in addition to this. Fred also played water polo. When he married in 1913, the swimming club presented him with a silver letter tray.
