Yachting on the Norfolk Broads - The Horning Regatta

1908 , Horning (Norfolk)

A sailing regatta on the Norfolk Broads, 1908.

The main part of this film shows sailing boats rounding a buoy in light winds. The craft vary from small lugsail rigged dinghies to fairly large yachts. The usual rig on the larger boats is gaff sloop with top sail. There are good shots of a motor cruiser and a heavily laden, steam screw-driven pleasure boat. The final scenes show the prize giving, with good views of the crowds in their best clothes; good examples of Edwardian fashion.

Background Information

Charles Aldous was a photographer in White Lion Street, Norwich. He recorded scenes of the Horning Regatta in 1908. He set his camera up on the bank near the Swan Inn and filmed anything interesting that happened, including an interlude when the pleasure steamer `Queen of the Broads' ploughed triumphantly through proceedings, fully laden with Broads sightseers.
