Events in Harwich in the 1950s.
The first few shots, taken c.1950, look towards Felixstowe and show a seaplane crane there with a Sunderland Seaplane nearby, Marriage's Flour Mill, and an air-sea rescue launch in Felixstowe Dock. Other shots around Harwich Harbour show a tug, a Trinity House Vessel, the Mecklenburg (a Dutch steamer) and the reserve fleet in the river. Shots of some football matches. The first, on Harwich football ground, is of The Grange versus Little Oakley. The next is of Harwich and Parkeston F.C. versus Leytonstone - result Harwich 4, Leytonstone 3. The third is a match for the Clacton Charity Cup, Clacton Versus Harwich, which Clacton won. There is a posed shot of the Clacton team and after some further shots of the match, Mr. T.F. Bernard presents them with the cup. The next sequence shows the timber ship `Mildred' on fire off Felixstowe beach on a bank holiday in 1953. Some holiday scenes shot at Dovercourt later that day follow, including a shot of the Cliff Pavilion, which has since been demolished. Other holiday scenes include a model sailing boat regatta on the boating lake, boating, putting, roller skating and tennis. The next sequence is of the devastation caused by the floods in 1953. A close-up still of the front page of the Standard reveals that this left 1700 people homeless. Heavy plant is shown rebuilding the seawall at Bathside, completely demolished by the floods. There are shots of builders completing wooden houses given by the Norwegian government. The final shots show hoardings for the General Election on Feb. 11th, 1954. The defeated Labour candidate was Shirley Catlin, later Mrs. Shirley Williams.

Background Information
During the 1950s Harwich and Parkeston were a well respected amateur club, playing in the Isthmian League. The Clacton Charity Cup match would have been a good win for Clacton, who played in a more junior league. The match between The Grange and Little Oakley is possibly an Essex Senior League match.
