Background Information

The Suffolk Aeroplane Club was formed in 1926, though it did not become active until August, 1927, when it began operations at an airfield near Hadleigh. It became affiliated to the Royal Aero Club in January, 1928, and received Air Ministry Approval as a club for the training of pilots. At Easter that year, the club held a two-day air display on its flying ground at Hadleigh. More than 5000 people attended the display on Easter Monday, when five machines took part in a handicap air race. During the display, one of the Club's pilots, Miss Sylvia Edwards, arrived on the field towing one of the club's Blackburn Bluebirds behind a car, unfolded its wings and flew off to give a display. This is shown in the Archive's film. The club took over the management of Ipswich Aerodrome on its opening in 1930. Flight Lieutenant Webster was a test pilot at the RAF base at Martlesham.
