The day to day working and local benefits of Felixstowe Port

A brief sequence illustrated with photographs charting the growth of the Port and the town of Felixstowe during the last century opens this film. This is accompanied by a song, written and performed in the style of a local folk song, but was written for the film. The film shows many sequences of the port at work, focusing on the East Quay, built for general cargo in 1951, the deep water oil jetty, built in 1964, the car terminal and the passenger terminal, a recent venture. Quay and handling facilities are shown along with the maintenance of the equipment and the training of the workers. The film stresses the communication links to Felixstowe, both road and rail. Much is made of the conditions of employment for the workers at the dock. The film also stresses the secondary employment brought to the area as a direct consequence of the Port of Felixstowe. We see a directors meeting showing how day to day issues are handled at the highest level. Throughout, the film stresses the opportunities for the port's workforce. One of the Directors speaking in this sequence has a strong local accent.
