The Great Dunmow village carnival and other village scenes.
Scenes showing the carnival procession in the village centre. events featured include a bedstead race. The competitors are in fancy dress. there is a close-up of one of the beds. This has a young woman lying on it. The town crier leads a band and the Carnival Queen on a tractor hauled float. She is followed by other Carnival Queens including those from Colchester and Buntingford. Some of the Queens travel in style in sports cars. There are various floats in the procession. These include one representing Emergency Ward, a train, with children walking inside, called The Beat Line and a procession of bubble cars representing the seven dwarfs. The next sequence shows the beginning of a hunt. There are men in pinks astride horse and the hounds arrive by lorry. Part of the hunt is shown. Some old cars and a cricket match also feature. The camera shows scenes from the village streets throughout. Some of these scenes show thatched buildings and some show more modern buildings from the 1930s and some contemporary buildings.The final sequence shows a Massey Ferguson combine at work, including scenes of the bulk grain being transferred into a trailer. This sequence shows how the country and urban areas came together, as the new houses are visible in the background. The light is fading towards the end of the sequence. The film finishes with night burning of the straw.
