A fire at the offices of Kent Blaxill & Co., Colchester

The first shot, looking down Colchester High Street, with St. Nicholas' Church on the right, shows a crowded thoroughfare with the fire in the distance. There is a large crowd as the fire occurred on a Saturday lunchtime. A closer shot shows George Farmer's tool shop with the fire just beyond. Various fire appliances are fighting the blaze, including one with an extending ladder. A fireman can be seen on the end of this ladder above the blaze. The crowd mill around on the street below. These include an AA man. The gutted building is shown, with the firemen tidying up and removing the ladder. A senior fire officer inspects the damage.

Background Information

Kent Blaxill & Co. Ltd dealt wholesale and retail in hardware items oil and glass. Their head office was at 102 - 104 High Street, Colchester, where they had been since 1838. Three years after the fire they rebuilt the offices on the same site. In 1966 they sold the building and moved to Layer Road.
