UEA LCR Gig History

2019 , Norwich (Norfolk)

An appreciation of the LCR venue at the University of East Anglia and the bands that have played there.

On the University of East Anglia campus, students walk past a large sign for the LCR. Interviewees guess that the abbreviation stands for Lower Common Room. Gavin Hudson, UEA Venues Operations Manager, talks about the ephemeral flyers and leaflets produced for gigs which are then thrown away, but which people find interesting years later. Posters and flyers from his collection are now displayed on the walls in the Students’ Union. When he joined UEA in 1979, he worked for Nick Rayns, Entertainments Manager, whose name is given to the large LCR space shown both empty and in use. Gavin talks about producing The Gig List 1963 – 2018. Students asked about the best gig they’ve attended answer: Wolf Alice, The Chuckle Brothers, Slaves. Over film of the University of East Anglia in 1982, Gavin talks about the original concept that UEA should remain a public space, and that people from Norwich should be welcome on campus and allowed to attend any lecture. The Students’ Union extended that welcome to gigs. He recalls when Coldplay were booked for the ‘Radio One Goes to College’ Live Lounge event – with the LCR a very small venue for the band between gigs at The Bullring, Madrid and Madison Square Garden. People started queuing three days before tickets went on sale, and Coldplay ordered £300 worth of pizza for people in the queue. Asked to sum up the LCR, interviewees respond: loud, sweaty / sticky, friendly, fun, exciting, entertainment.
