Film of the ‘old crocks’ car run showing vehicles built prior to 1905 on their way from London to Brighton.

Various vintage cars are overtaken by contemporary models on a busy stretch of road in a village en route between London and Brighton, on the Veteran Car Run. Cyclists, motor cyclists and a motor bus are also seen. One participant is seen to be having some trouble with their car.

Background Information

The London to Brighton Veteran Car Run still takes place today. It is the longest-running motoring event in the world, dating from 1896 when the Locomotives on Highways Act was passed increasing the speed limit from 2mph in towns and 4mph in the country to 14mph. Prior to this, an escort was required to walk 20m in front of the vehicle. To qualify, cars must have been built before 1st January 1905 and are not allowed to exceed an average speed of 20mph. The event is not a race. Any vehicles to reach Brighton before 16:30 receive a bronze medal.
