Home movie footage showing highlights of the aerial display at RAF Duxford to mark Empire Day, a day to celebrate being part of the British Empire.

A pilot climbs into the cockpit of the Gloster Gauntlet Mark II fighter aircraft and the plane lines up alongside three other planes, which set off in unison in a line. A group of boys eagerly watch. The planes continue with an aerial display; a stream of thick smoke streaming from one aircraft to create a pattern in the sky, appearing to spell the word ‘empire’.

Background Information

Empire Day was a day of national celebration for Britain and her colonies. The first 'Empire Day' took place on 24th May 1902, the Queen’s birthday. In 1958 Empire Day was renamed Commonwealth Day.
