Donald Zec interviews theatre and film director Otto Preminger as part of Anglia's "Shooting Stars" television series.
Donald Zec interviews American theatre and film director, Otto Preminger, who is originally from Austria-Hungary and speaks with an accent. The interviewer remarks on the filmmaker’s reputation for being controversial, and on the filmmaker’s experience of directing films from The Moon Is Blue (1953) to Exodus (1960) which contain controversial subjects or themes. Preminger argues he is a progressive or modern man, and claims that the current movies are somewhat behind the times. He argues his films are harmless. He claims the old-fashioned critics are the problem, not the public. He argues he doesn’t get criticism from the public, just from pressure groups like The National Legion of Decency in America, a Catholic group, otherwise he doesn’t have problems with censorship. The interviewer mentions the director’s film “Anatomy of a Murder”. How does the filmmaker feel about politics? Preminger is interested in the inner workings of American government, the balance of power between the president and the senate. The interviewer mentions the symbol on the director’s notepaper that shows “the lid of the capital being lifted off”. The director argues against drawing any literal conclusions from the symbol, and explains it as “art”. The interviewer mentions that the director has a reputation for being a tyrant on the set of a movie. Preminger argues that he doesn’t worry about what others think about him, relying only on his conscience. The interviewer wishes the director luck with his new picture. The director says he will bring the new picture to England.
